So you’ve decided to try and lure some customers into your retail storefront with a sign. You can chose an A frame sign, a sandwich board, a sidewalk sign, etc. There are many varieties of signs out there. Today we will give you some tips on how to make your advertisement more effective.

First, when choosing the type of display you may want to purchase one that allows you to change your message every few weeks. By changing your message you allow your advertising to coincide with your business throughout the year. Why advertise snow cones in February when Hot Cocoa is your biggest seller? Additionally, a sign that changes will catch the local’s eye. Don’t you notice when something in your neighborhood changes?

Second, put a call to action on your sign. Make the consumer want to come in for something. Ask your current customer why they came in…will that translate into a message for your sign? Ask an interesting question and prompt your customer to come in for the answer.

Third, stay true to your brand. Brand management is important and you want to keep yours consistent. Use your logo in the colors you normally do, don’t deviate and create brand confusion. Don’t invent new tag lines either. Keep it simple and keep the brand consistent. The more often a consumer sees your brand, the more likely they will recall it when they need one of your products.

Finally, keep the ad itself simple. If people are walking or driving by they have between one and three seconds to review your ad unless they come to a screeching halt. Make sure it can be read and digested in that time. Make them want to come in! If you can speak with them, they can become a customer.

And Finally and a half (thank you Jeffrey Gitomer), make sure the text and images are the appropriate size for your audience. If you are targeting people driving by you will need larger characters and images, smaller for walkers….you get the idea…now go wrangle those customers into your store!
